Threads of Incan Mythology

THE NATIVES of the land of Cuzco affirm that in the beginning there was a being who created the world. Owing to this he was called Viracocha Pachayachachi, which means "Creator of all Things." Viracocha ordered the people to live without quarrelling, and that they should know and serve him. This they kept to, but eventually the vices of pride and covetousness arose among them. Thus he confounded and cursed them and over all there came a great flood which they call uu pachacuti, which means "water that overturns the land." The Incas say that it rained 60 days and nights and that it drowned all created things. Most of the world's great civilisations have their own versions of how the world was created and most have a tale of the great flood. From Ancient Egypt to Assyria, India, the Chinese, the Celts, the Mayans and so too the Incas of Peru. That there are so many similarities in these stories from disparate nations around the world is truly amazing. This small volume contains selected translations of

Polynesian Mythology & Ancient Traditional History of the New Zealanders - 23 Maori Folktales

TOWARDS the close of 1845 Sir George Grey was unexpectedly requested to administer the affairs of New Zealand. On arrival he found the Maori tribes engaged in hostilities with the Queen's troops, against whom they had contended with considerable success. He quickly realised he could neither successfully govern, nor hope to conciliate, with a people whose language, manners, customs and religion he was quite unacquainted. With no published Maori dictionary, nor books to study its construction, he found this to be a most difficult task. To his surprise he found that the Maori chiefs, in their speeches or in their letters, frequently quoted fragments of ancient poems or proverbs, or made allusions which rested on an ancient system of mythology. This gave him further impetus to learn the language of the country. For more than eight years he devoted a great part of his available time to co
