ROYALTIES & PHILANTHROPY

Philanthropy

Because our CEO, John Halsted, is also a published and practising author, he understands the frustration experienced by authors with publishing houses and the minimal returns offered. This has driven him to create this win-win profit/royalty model which is totally unique in self-publishing, if not the publishing industry altogether.

This is a win-win model designed by authors for authors.

He is also a firm believer in “Giving something back”.  A non-negotiable rule of having your book published with Abela Publishing is a minimum 5% donation (of the profit) to a registered charity of your choice.

Under John’s guidance Abela Publishing has commenced publishing Rare and Out Of Print books in a series titles “Folk-Lore, Fairy Tales Myths and Legends from Around the World”. 33% of the profit from this series is donated to charities and organisations which specialise in education scholarships. I think you will agree he has taken the "give something back" principle a step further than most.

Royalties

WHOLESALE vs RETAIL

If your book is sold via your website, the costs are deducted and the royalty is worked out from the RETAIL price.

If a book is sold via a bricks-n-mortar store or a third party website (like Amazon or Borders), the costs are deducted and your royalty is worked out from the WHOLESALE price i.e. the price they bought the book from Abela Publishing for.

The WHOLESALE price is usually between 66% and 75% of the RETAIL price.

After all the costs and commissions have been subtracted from the selling price, what is left is profit. However because Abela Publishing is a publisher, wholesaler and distributor, we have greatly reduced the supply-chain costs thereby maximising profits and hence maximising your royalty.

Ordinarily a publishing house would take anywhere between 85% and 95% of the profit and leave you with the balance – which is usually not much. But through our refreshing approach to the royalty split we hope to change that.

The Abela Publishing royalty model is:

10%    Charitable donation

45%    Author Royalty

45%    Abela Publishing

Payment of Royalties

If the royalty total is more than GBP£50 or ±US$100, author royalties will be paid quarterly.

If the royalty amount totals less than GBP£50 or ±US$100 payment will be made bi-annually.

Open Book Policy

As an Abela Author, you are entitled to request one free balance sheet per published book annually.

Balance sheets can be requested on a monthly or quarterly basis. However there will be an administration charge for producing these.
