Chapter 26
His mind made up and no time to waste, he threw the little Toyota into gear and sped off to his right, the left side of the extended bamboo fence in the hope that this would give him the opportunity to crouch beside the car and give himself some protection against possible unwelcome welcoming committee. It might also give him a bit of cover to creep up on the people holding Rose, if this was in fact where they had her, and if they had not heard or seen his arrival, unlikely though that was. Reaching the fence he skidded the car to a halt on the asphalt surface, not as quietly as he would have wished, and cautiously levered himself out of the vehicle onto the ground and knelt down beside it.
With that a shot rang out, whistling passed his head, and slammed into the fence next to him. He reacted! His years of experience in just such circumstances as a game ranger in the anti-poaching unit took over, and Mo started to operate on automatic, allowing his training to take the lead. He threw himself flat onto the ground at the base of the bamboo fence and kept on rolling, as his sheer size and weight burst him through the flimsy materials which was designed more for privacy than as a wall. Finding himself with a little bit of cover from both the car and the fence, he started to leopard crawl towards the junction of the fence and what appeared to be a courtyard wall. As he crawled towards the brick wall, he rationalized that he must be at the place where they were holding Rose or else why would they be shooting at him.
He reached the junction, judged the height of the wall to be about the same as the fence, a piece of cake to an athlete of his height and ability, pulled his long legs up underneath him, and leapt for the top of the wall. Meanwhile I lay on my back on a couch in a waiting room next to the court. A gorgeous blond paramedic sat next to me (Im probably not allowed to say that but, hey, I certainly wasnt worrying about such niceties at that stage). She had just finished sticking my scalp back together with a couple of those little sticky things they nowadays use instead of stitches to stick people back together again, whilst her partner had gone off to see what was taking the stretcher such a long time in arriving. As beautiful as she was, my mind was firmly fixed on only one thing and that was my precious Rose and my need to gain time for Mo to rescue her. So I continued to extract sympathy from all present as I managed to get in a couple of really professional and realistic groans of pain.
In one smooth movement Mo hit the top of the wall, pulled himself up with his hands aiding his upward momentum, vaulted over and fell to the ground on the other side. He landed awkwardly and was vaguely aware of a sharp pain in his left ankle, but as he hit the ground with a lung-emptying crunch, he caught sight of Rose out of the corner of his eye. As he fought to ignore the pain in his ankle and catch his breath, he observed that there was a figure behind her, holding her tightly to him with his left arm around her neck, while the right hand held a knife to her stomach. It was a particularly lethal looking knife. Probably one the extra large and sharp knives used for dissecting the sharks.
All these observations registered in his mind in an instant as Mo, in one continuing and fluid motion, again pulled his legs up under him and sprang. This time, however, despite the pain in his ankle, he shot forward straight at Rose. The person holding Rose reacted instinctively and threw her to the side at the same time swinging the knife around to point ominously at Mos flying torso. Rose went sprawling on her back on the ground as Mo crashed, with all his weight, into what he now realized was an adult man, at the same time the knife tearing painfully into Mos stomach.
Whenever Mo was acting as a bodyguard for either Rose or myself, as he was today at the courthouse, I always
insisted that he wore a bulletproof vest. Thank God that he was indeed wearing one today. The knife sliced through the outer material of the vest like a hot knife through butter but, fortunately, was then deflected by the armour from doing anything more than slightly winding him. As Mo lay there gasping for breath, the knife-man assuming he had debilitated Mo, turned and yelled Knife wielding man made no move towards Rose, so Mo just lay still and pretended to be injured. The partner arrived within seconds of being summoned, also over the wall like Mo but less athletically, and the two bent over him, one on either side of him. Suddenly Mo opened his eyes, then with just enough time to register the surprise in Knife-mans eyes, he grabbed each mans head in one of his massive hands, and cracked them together. The crack could be heard from the other side of the parking lot, and without knowing what had hit them, they both collapsed in a heap on top of a still winded Mo. He disdainfully shrugged them off, and with that Rose landed on the ground next to him, arms about him, crying uncontrollably. Mo automatically hugged her to him and
they lay like that for some time as Rose sobbed. At last they gratefully realized they were both still alive, and so
gingerly, Mo got to his feet and, despite the pain in his ankle, his first concern being for Rose as he gently lifted
her to her feet. Then he saw that there was blood on her dress and it nearly sent Mo into a panic. Seeing the look on his face she was quick to reassure him,
Im OK, its just a scratch. The knife just nicked me when he threw me down. How about you? She asked with
concern.
Im just a bit winded and I think I might have twisted my ankle, Mo replied, rubbing his foot gingerly. Now I
must let Jack know everythings OK.
Mo turned round to the two heavies and when he saw them he was so reminded of what Rose must have been through, that he almost lost it. Knife-man was starting to regain consciousness so he delivered a powerful kick to the mans ribs and the man slipped back into unconsciousness.
He then stood with his foot firmly planted in the middle of the partners back, glaring down at him, almost willing him too to move, then unsympathetically, almost kicking him out of pure relief that Rose was uninjured, with his cold refrigerator-like stare, he sighed and groped in his pants pocket for his phone. Amazingly calmly he pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and hit fast dial.
