Chapter 4 A Horseman Rides By
Blam!
A .40 calibre bullet blasted from Dereks pistol muzzle at a velocity of 370 metres/second. Two screams rang across the bush. One was from Karen as she stared in horror, the other came from Derek as he crumpled to the ground with an arrow impaling his thigh. The shaft had penetrated right up to the fletching. In shock Derek had fired wide and the bullet zinged away into the bush. With two crims out of action, Karen elbowed Tom in the guts, turned and drove her knee into his groin. He groaned, released his hold on her and staggered back a few paces, but he was still standing and levelled his gun, aiming between Karens eyes.
Bad move, sunshine, a voice said calmly from only a few metres behind the tent. Dont even think about it or youre a dead man. Drop the gun.
A man who looked in his mid-twenties sat astride a black horse. Hed re-arrowed his bow and held a firm bead on Tom. The stranger kept a rock-steady aim and Tom knew he stood no chance. He relaxed the grip on his pistol and let it drop to the ground. Dereks gun lay beside him and Mike went to retrieve it.
Just leave the guns where they are for the moment, the stranger said, transferring his aim to Mike. We seem to have restored the status quo. Im pretty sure I know what this is all about, but fill me in anyway. Quick version will do.
Karen told him. The stranger listened, but didnt comment. He dismounted and tethered his horse before picking up the two automatic pistols. He herded the three escapees close together sensing Karen and Mike werent his immediate threat.
New uniform? the stranger asked with just the hint of a smile as he passed Karen. She disappeared into the tent, dressed and was back in seconds.
Police issue? he asked holding the guns towards Mike for inspection.
Mike nodded and the stranger turned to Tom. Derek and Cedric were no use. They simply moaned and nursed their wounds.
Where did you get these guns? he asked.
Silence.
The stranger put a bullet through Cedrics skull.
You were saying ..?
He sensed Karen and Mike were ready to move.
No heroics please, the stranger said without raising his voice. I can kill you just as easily.
That pulled them up short. It was the sheer decisive finality and self-assurance of the man. No one was in any doubt he meant exactly what he said. No warning, no second chance.
We cant let you shoot people. Were police officers ... Karen stammered.
Not anymore, the stranger snapped. Youre just survivors same as the rest of us.
He turned back to Tom.
Now, where were we? Oh yes, the guns. Where did you get em?
Took em off two coppers back in Bright.
And they just let you?
Naw, we ad to persuade em, didnt we?
You murdered them?
Yeah, so what? Whats it to you? Like yer said there aint no cops no more.
The stranger shot Tom through the temple, turned the gun on Derek and put a bullet into his heart. He rifled through their pockets and collected any spare ammunition he found. It was all the three villains carried that was worth anything. He emptied the magazines, handed one weapon to Mike and pocketed the other along with half the bullets.
Half each, the stranger said, that seems fair to me.
Karen just stared at him.
They were baggage, he said.
Who are you? she managed at last.
Not the Lone Ranger thats for sure. My names Zach McAlister...
