Indian Why Stories

This volume was written and recorded in a time when the great Northwest was rapidly becoming a settled country. With the passing of the traditional ways of the Indian much of the America's aboriginal folk-lore, rich in its fairy-like characters, and its relation to the lives of its native people has been lost. There is a wide difference between folk-lore of the so-called Old World and that of America. Indian Fairy Tales

Soils and national characters differ, but fairy tales are often the same in plot and incidents, if not in style. Most of the 27 tales in this volume of Indian fairy tales are known in the West in some form or other; how can we account for their simultaneous existence in both Europe and Asia? Some have declared that India is the home of the fairy tale, and that all European fairy tales have been brought from thence by crusaders, Mongol missionaries, Gipsies, Jews, traders, and travellers. After all, India is on one branch of the fabled Silk and Spice Routes, over which Europeans and Asians have been travelling for several millennia. We should be prepared, within certain limits, to hold a brief for India. The common fairy stories of the children of Europe, which form a greater part of their stories as a whole, are derived from Indian tales. In particular, the majority of the Drolls, or comic tales and jingles, can be traced without much difficulty back to the Indian peninsula. To assemble this volume,

  • 27 illustrated tales from India
  • The best of the Jatakas, the Bidpai, Tales of the Sun, Baluchi and Kashmiri folk-tales

Old Indian Legends

THE legends contained in this volume are relics of the USA's once virgin soil. These and many others are the tales the American Indians loved so much to hear beside the night fire. For these people the personified elements and other spirits played in a vast world right around the center fire of the wigwam. Iktomi, the snare weaver, Iya, the Eater, and Old Double-Face are not wholly fanciful creatures. In this volume you will find fourteen stories from the Dakotas. Stories of Iktomi and the Ducks, the badger and the bear, Iktomi and the coyote, the toad and the boy, the shooting of the red eagle and more. Under an open sky, nestling close to the earth, the old Dakota story- tellers have told these legends time and again. While it is easy to recognize such legends without difficulty, the renderings may vary in little incidents. Here, Zitkala-Sa has tried to transplant the native spirit of these tales -- root and all -- into the English language, since America in the last few centu
