King Bele of Sogn had two sons, Helgi and Halfdan, and a daughter named Ingeborg. Across the fjord, lived the king's friend Thorstein Víkingsson whose son Fridthjof (Friðþjófr or Friedhof), called "the bold", was the bravest among men. Fridthjof had been raised with Ingeborg by their foster-father Hilding.
Both Bele and Thorsteinn died in war whereupon Helgi and Halfdan ruled the kingdom. They were jealous of Fridthjof's excellent qualities and denied Fridthjof Ingeborg's hand. They took her to Balder's sacred enclosure where no one dared touch her. Still, Fridthjof visited Ingeborg and their love for each other continued to grow.
This angered Helgi and Halfdan and Fridthjof was banished to Orkney. They also demanded tribute. While he was away they burnt down his homestead and married Ingeborg to the aged king Ring of Ringerike.
When Frithjof returned with the tribute, he burnt down Balder's temple and left to live as a viking. After three years he wintered with king Ring. Fridthjof's identity became apparent and the dying king appointed Fridthjof earl and made him the care-taker of Ring's and Ingeborg's child. After Rings death, Fridthjof and Ingeborg married and he became the king of Ringerike. He declared war on Ingeborg's brothers, killed one and made the second his vassal.
Tegne'r's poem, "Fridthjof's Saga," has been printed in Sweden in many editions and in almost every possible style. It has been illustrated and it has been set to music most famously by Heinrich Hofmann but also by Bruch and Johan Wagenaar. Moreover it has been rendered into English by eighteen different translators, and has been translated into nearly all the modern European languages.

Excerpt from FRIDTHJOF'S SAGA
CANTO XXIV - THE RECONCILIATION
And Fridthjof, leaning on his sword, whose glance
Shines far around, stood lost as in a trance,
And charmd, and silent, gazd upon the dance.
Thereat his childhoods memries how they throng
Before his rapturd eye! A jocund train, and long,
And innocent, and glad, and true,
With eyes like heavns own blue,
And heads rich-circled by bright-golden tresses;
His former youth-friend, each with some sweet sign addresses.
Then all his viking life,
With scenes of murdrous strife
And bold adventure rife,
Like some dark, bloody shadow sinketh
Fast down to night. Ah! glad he drinketh
Forgetfulness sweet cup, and thinketh,
Repose at last those sea-king exploits have;
I stand a flowr-crownd bauta-stone upon their grave.
Son Fridthjof, welcome! yes, Ive long expected
That thou shouldst come, for force, tis true, still wanders
Round land and sea afar, wild berserk like,
That pale with rage the shields hard border biteth;
But yet at last it home returns again,
Out wearied and call calm. The strong-armed Thor
Full oft against giant Jotunheim did wend,
But Spite his belt celestial, spite his gauntlets,
Utgard-Loke still his throne retains;
Evil, itself a force, to force yields never!
Now, only Halfdan sits on Beles chair,
Thy hand, brave Fridthjof, offer him. Revenge
And passion sacrifice to heavns high gods;
This Balders shrine demandeth. I demand too,
As Balderss hihgest priest, in token meet
That peaces gentle chief thou hast not mocked
With vain professions and an empty homage.
Decide, my son! shall Balders peace be broken?
If so, in vain thoust built this fane, the token
Of mild forgiveness, and in vain agd priest hath spoken!
That agd and awful priest then glad removeth
The curse that rested on the varg i véum,
Fridthjof the outlaw; and as the last deep accents
Of reconcilement and of blessing sounded,
Lo! Ingborg sudden enters, rich adornd
With bridal oranments, and all enrobd
In gorgeous ermine, and by bright-eyd maidens
Slow followd, as on heavns broad canopy
Attending star-trains guard the regent moon!
But young brides fair eyes
Those two blue skies
Fill quick with tears,
And to her brothers heart she trembling sinketh;
He, with his sisters fears
Deep-movd, her hand all tenderly in Fridthjofs linketh,
His burden soft transferring to that heros breast,
Its long-tried, faith fit place for Ingborgs rest;
Then to her hearts first, best beloved, her childhoods friend,
In nuptial band
She gives her lily hand,
As before pardning Balders altar both low bend!
