A South African crime boss institutes divorce proceedings against his wife who defends the action. Later, she is found shot dead in her apartment and the criminal husband charged with her murder. But have the police been too blinkered in their approach and too quick to conclude that the husbands criminal connections automatically make him the killer?
So starts a flying trip to New York by the notorious lawyer, Jack Delaney, to investigate the husbands mafia connections followed by a trip to a 'Big 5' Game Reserve in South Africa to investigate his criminal connections in the highly illegal, but lucrative, rhino horn and elephant tusk trade. While this shows the husband to be a most unsavoury character, does it make him a wife murderer? Why would the husband have started divorce proceedings and then killed his wife? If murder was on his mind, would it have not been simpler and cleaner for the wife to take a long, long vacation - mafia style?
The murder trial starts and after many twists and turns, the evidence presented often leaves the reader to wonder if the husband was the actual killer or if he hired the killer and colluded with him. The 'grande finale' comes during the trial with the unmasking of the murderer.

CHAPTER 10
I was about to slam the door shut in their faces when Mo, realizing what I was about to do, reacted first by sticking his foot into the gap of the opened door to prevent me from closing it and demanding belligerently, What do you want?
Ignoring Mo and his rudeness, Hamilton stepped forward cautiously with his hands up in a conciliatory manner and addressed me, May I have a few moments of you time please Mr. Delaney?
Stunned at this unexpected turn of events I managed to stammer stupidly, What? Youre not serious are you?
Im perfectly serious and I need your help. If youll let us in and give me a few minutes of your time, Ill explain it all to you, he responded placatingly, at the same time taking another small exploratory step towards the entrance hall.
Not ready to have any words at all with this killer, I took the ethical path and advised, Sorry, but as an attorney I may not speak with you without the permission of you own lawyers.
I do not want to talk to you about the divorce, the fat man hastened to assure me. Please give me the opportunity to explain myself and then if you wont help me out, Ill be off.
Good manners and a deep-seated curiosity got the better of my nervousness, and so, saying a silent prayer for protection, I stood aside and motioned for them to enter.
I was still so down on myself that I thought this could give me the perfect opportunity to relieve some of my frustrations and I could vent my feelings on Hamilton and his bodyguards.
Mo moved quickly ahead of us to collect a couple of chairs from the dining room and placed them with ours in the lounge, as I observed the shocked looks on both Rose and Emmas faces as Hamilton and his boys entered.
We all sat down, the two bodyguards taking the dining room chairs, while Hamilton joined me on the sofa. Mo shot me a raised eyebrow as we both took in the dress of the two bodyguards. Hamilton was dressed in a suit but both his men were still wearing long, floor length coats over their suits. And in this Durban summer weather too!
Sorry to gate crash in on you, Hamilton apologetically started as he wearily sat back more comfortably on the sofa, but Ive managed to get myself into a bit of a corner and this makes things very urgent as I understand Im about to be arrested for my wifes murder.
So what do you want with us? After all Im your wifes lawyer, not yours, I pointed out, recovering my courage somewhat as I turned sideways to glare at him. At the same time I was very aware of the size of the three men. Fortunately though, I had Mo there, but the three interlopers together still hopelessly out muscled the two of us.
I want to hire you to defend me if Im charged with my wifes murder, Hamilton replied as he carefully wiped his sweaty face with an oversized handkerchief, managing to catch us all by surprise by the audacity of his request.
At last I recovered from the shock and, struggling to regain both my composure and powers of speech, I cried, What? Are you nuts? Surely you cant expect me to defend you with murdering my client!?
